Most anticipated January Releases

Hey, look at me finally writing a blog post again, haha! I just had a sudden burst of inspiration, right now, as I’m typing this, to share my most anticipated reads of January with the world, and because it would be hard to do it on Instagram, I was like; “why not use that blog you have?” So here I am posting and stuff! 😀

Anyways I will stop babbling now and get to the point of this entire post, a list of all the amazing books coming out in January that I am dying to get my hands on. Fair warning though, it’s a looooong list!

1. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Release date: January 2nd 2018.

1: Holly Black is one of my favourite authors and I absolutely love her writing.

2: It’s about fairies and royalty, which are some of my favourite things to read about.

3: It has gotten such good reviews from those lucky bastards people who got their hands on ARCs, which seems promising.

1: It takes place in a world where time is used as currency and also determines how long you live, which just sounds fantastic! Actually, it sounds horrible but in a way that makes me excited to read the book! 😀

1: Okay fine the main reason I want this is the cover. I mean look at it! It’s stunning and will look great in my insta photos!

2: I’ve been digging YA western books lately soo I feel like I’ll like this one.

3: The tagline says; the heroine is a cross between Katniss Everdeen and Annie Oakley which you know sounds awesome!

4. Meet cute by a bunch of authors

1: I’ve never read a book that takes place in Alaska before so I’m really excited to do so.

2: I really enjoy YA thrillers and this one sounds like a good one.

3: the cover really drew me in. It just looks so mysterious and icy and I feel like I kinda have to read it.

7. Unearthed by Amy Kaufman and Megan Spooner

1: It’s being pitched as “Indiana Jones in space” Which I’m totally here for because it sounds awesome!

2: Sci fi is quickly becoming one of my favourite genres so naturally I just want to read all the things!

3: I love both of the authors and trust them to write good stuff.

9. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

Three reasons I’m excited:

1: It takes place at a boarding school, which is one of my favourite settings to read about.

2: the tagline says “perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and E. Lockhart” and since I’m a fan of both I’m guessing I’ll like it.

3: It apparently jumps between two time periods and I generally tend to enjoy stories like that.

10. Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

Release date: January 23rd 2018.

Publisher: Razorbill.

Three reasons I’m excited:

1: this book is about a necromancer and I don’t think I’ve ever read a necromancy book I didn’t love so I feel like I’ll love this one too.

2: There are apparently some great diversity and LGTBQ+ rep in this book, which is always nice to see.

3: It apparently has lots of magic, monsters and female friendships, which sounds perfect!

 

11. Let’s talk about Love by Claire Kann.

1: It’s about an asexual girl and I’ve never actually read a book about an asexual character before.

2: It sounds like it’s going to be a really cute, fun read.

3: The cover just makes me smile.

 

12. The hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

August wrap up

It’s that time of the month again. The time for a wrap up. This month has been a great reading month for me. I have however been sick and busy whit work, which means I couldn’t read as much as I wanted and even though the books I read were great it was hard to get through them because you know I had a fever. That’s why I had to degrade this month from awesome to great. Anyways Lets move I read ten books this month and all of them were 5 or 4 star reads which I guess makes this an awesome reading month. On to the actual books, I read this month.

And I Darken by Kiersten White

This book was amazing and I loved it. It is a retelling of Vlad the impailer, only its gender flipped so that Vlad is actually a girl named Lada. I gave it five stars and if you want to know more, I have a review.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This book was just WOW. I loved the writing style, the characters and the story. It is about a girl named Mia who is an assassin. She wants to go to the red church, which trains assassins so that she can get revenge on the people that killed her family. The red church may be a school but this is nothing like Hogwarts, this is a school where the teachers give you tasks that may kill you, and all your classmates are all trained killers. It was awesome! There is also magic elements in this story and boy were they fantastic. I gave this 5 stars and it is definitely on my top 10 reads of this year list.

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

This was another amazing story. I loved how the whole monster thing worked and the characters were great. I also really enjoyed the lack of romance in this book. It was refreshing. I gave this one 5 stars as well.

Ruined by Amy Tintera

This book was full of magic and intrigue and I loved it. It was about a girl who impersonates a princess in order to marry the prince of the family that killed her parents and is hunting her people. She is planning to kill this family to get revenge but she develops some feelings for her husband which making her question the plan. It was a captivating story and I gave it 5 stars.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows.

So this book is co-written by two of my favourite authors and a third one that I have been meaning to read a book by so I had to buy it. It was a fun book that used lot of humour and mixed magic into history. The way they did it made it fun but not totally farfetched. It was great and I gave it 5 stars. Are you noticing a theme yet?

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs

This is the second book in the miss peregrine’s peculiar children trilogy, and it was just as good as the first book, maybe even better. It picks up right where the first book ended and from that point on it is a crazy ride full of adventure and peculiarity. Can you guess how many stars I gave it? That’s right 5!

The Fixer and The Long Game By Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I found myself being in the mood for a mystery type thing after all the fantasy I read and The fixer sounded perfect. It is a political series about Tess who has to move to D.C to live with her sister who happens to be the most famous Fixer there. What is a fixer you ask? It is a person that fixes things for important people, covers up scandals, makes problems go away etc. Tess does something for one of her classmates and before she knows it, the entire school is coming to her with their problems, because they think she is a fixer like her sister. Both books had lots of action and an intriguing mystery and I really enjoyed them both. I gave them 4.5 stars.

The Conspiracy of Us and Map of Fates by Maggie Hall

This series by Maggie Hall is also full of mystery and intrigue. It is about Avery that finds out that her family is part of an ancient society containing some of the most influential people of the world. Like that isn’t enough of a shock it turns out she is part of a prophecy that the circle believes is the key to defeating their enemies the Order and if they realise who she is they would all want to use her. Then it turns out that the order has kidnapped someone she cares about and in order to save him she has to follow a bunch of clues he left her around the world. So far, I am really enjoying the story and I will definitely be picking up book three when it is released. I gave both of these books 4 stars.

This book is the best historical fictions I have read in a while. It had great characters and amazing world building. Now if you like fast-paced books this might not be for you because this book was slow-paced and spent a lot of time on building the world and explaining the characters. I still think you should read it though because it was amazing and I feel like the next book in the series will have a lot more action.

Plot

This book is a gender flipped historical fiction about Vlad the impaler, who in this novel is known as Lada. The story follows Lada and her brother Radu as they grow up first in their homeland of Wallachia then in the ottoman courts where they are being kept to ensure Wallachia stays in line. We get to see them at different ages, from children to young adults, which I really enjoyed because it gave me such a deep understanding of who they are and the choices they make. Lada who has always been fierce and deeply loves her country becomes a warrior that is willing to do whatever it takes to get home, even if it means being cruel and vicious. Radu who has always been gentle and kind on the other hand never wants to go home, because he feels like he has finally found a place where he is safe and loved. There is also Mehmed the ottoman prince who both of them care about, that at first brings them closer together but later drives them apart.

What I liked

Lada. Lada was definitely my favourite character in this book. She was a princess fighting to have the same opportunities as men in a time where women were supposed to be pretty, delicate flowers. I also really enjoyed that she was so imperfect; she was often cruel and willing to do anything to get back to Wallachia

The character development and world building. I love how we get to follow Lada and Radu over such a long period and really learn about them and their empire. I mean if the book had started whit them living in the Ottoman Empire and you never got to see Wallachia or their father I probably wouldn’t like Lada as much as I did or understand her choices as well.

The relationship between Lada and Radu. These two have a complicated relationship. They really care about each other but because they are so different, they don’t understand each other and at times, they even despise the other person. they also want different things and sure normally this may not be a big deal but when one of you is hell bent on getting home and views the country you live in as enemy territory while the other one feels like he is finally home and never wants to go back to your homeland it becomes a problem. I think it will be very interesting to see how their relationship evolves in the second book and I really can’t wait.

Side characters. The side character in this book were really well fleshed out and I loved that. Even the characters I disliked I still appreciated because they were so real. Every single character in this story was complex, even the characters that we only see for a short amount of time somehow managed to be fleshed out so well that you got a real sense of who they were. I also appreciate how every single character in this story was neither good nor bad, but a bit of both. Sure, there were bad people and good people but the good ones were capable of evil and the bad ones capable of good.

What I disliked.

Radu. I really did not like Radu, mostly because I really didn’t get him. Sure, I understood his thought process and everything but I just did not agree with him. I know this might be a bad thing to say but honestly, I agree whit Lada’s opinion that he is a crybaby. I still enjoyed reading his chapter though and I like his storyline, just not him as a person.

Mehmed. Mehmed is the ottoman prince that both siblings love and I honestly just don’t get it. I feel like he really wasn’t really that special and some of the things he did made me go ugh. Sure, he was nice and kind and cared about Lada and Radu but I just did not like him that much.

In short.

In short this was an amazing historical fiction full of character development and world building that is a fantastic start to what will most likely be a beautiful and heart breaking series. I personally think everyone that like historical fiction or even fantasy (there is no fantasy in this book btw) should read this book but if you really hate slow books, you might not enjoy it.

A late June wrap up

Remember that blogging and reading slump I talked about in my may wrap up? Well it’s still here…

This month I haven’t made a single blog post and I only read five books and one graphic novel. The main reason for this is the fact that I have been super busy at work and not had any energy or time for blogging and reading. I am so thankful that all of you guys are still following me and I will hopefully do better this month.

the books I read

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey.

This book has been on my TBR forever and has a lot of hype surrounding it. I was almost afraid of reading it because it had so much hype but I finally did, and I am happy to say that I liked it. It didn’t blow me away or anything but it was a good book and I enjoyed it enough to give it 4.5 stars.

Blood Red Road by Moira Young.

This book was weird. It had weird language that put me off a little bit. I enjoyed the story though and gave it 3,5 stars.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

I kept putting this book of for so long because I was so sure I would dislike it. The reason is the fact that I did not enjoy the Grisha trilogy and thought that since this takes place in the same world I would dislike this as well. I was wrong! This book was great and I loved it. I gave it 5 stars.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson.

I have loved every single one of Morgan Matson’s books and this was no exception. It was cute, fun and full of great relationships. I gave it 5 stars.

The Way I Used To Be by Amber Smith.

This book is about a girl who is raped and it was heart breaking. It was so emotional and raw. It was a good book about a terrible thing and I gave it 4.5 stars.

Zodiac Starforce: By the power of Astra by Kevin Panetta and Paulina Ganucheau.

This is a graphic novel about a group of teen girls with magical powers that fight monsters and I really enjoyed it. The graphics and the story was great and I gave it 4.5 stars.

May wrap up

This month I have been in an incredible slump. Not just when it comes to reading but also blogging. I honestly thought getting in a blogging slump would never happen to me but sadly, it did. I have just been so incredibly busy this month and have lacked motivation to blog. I have also been feeling like I can’t write at all and that everything I post is crap, so I figured I probably shouldn’t write while feeling like that. Hopefully this wrap up will be the end of my slump but I can’t promise anything seeing as how I just started my summer job at the library (so awesome) and will be quite busy there.

I did read 10 books and 2 graphic novels before the slump kicked and ruined everything. My slump is actually so bad that even being at the library, surrounded by YA books all day can’t snap me out of it. I mean when you can’t find one single book you want to read at the library it is BAD!

Anyways I’ll stop complaining now and share the books I did read with you guys. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas . I absolutely loved this book. It was amazing! It was such an improvement over book one and I just loved every part of it. The night court was amazing and I ended up liking Rhysand, which I didn’t think, would happen because I really disliked him in ACOTAR. Did I mention I loved it? I DID!! I gave this book 5++ stars.

Golden Son by Pierce Brown. This is the second book in the Red Rising trilogy and although I liked it a lot it did not quite meet my expectations. I loved Red Rising so much and I just did not like this book quite as much. This was still an awesome book though and I will definitely read book three really soon. I gave this book 4,5 stars.

The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead . This book has been getting a lot of hate lately and I can definitely see why because it had some big Problems. Like the plot holes and weird fantasy countries that are obviously supposed to be England and America. I have to admit that I really liked this book though. It was just a fun read when overlooking the faults and I will probably (definitely) buy the companion novels. I gave this book 4 stars.

When We Collided by Emery Lord. This book was part cute summer romance and part girl dealing with mental illness. I really liked that this book did not do the typical all it takes for the mental illness to get better is to fall in love trope but instead showed that even if everything is going great the illness is still there. I gave this book 4 stars.

Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver. Lauren Oliver’s books tend to be a hit or miss for me and sadly, this one was a miss. It’s not that it was a bad story or badly written, it just didn’t grab me. I did not feel invested in the characters or the story. I gave this book 3 stars.

I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson. This book is one that EVERYBODY seems to love. I have heard so many amazing things about it and my expectations were sky high. I am happy to say I was not disappointed. This book was beautifully written and I really enjoyed it. I may not have loved it quite as much as most people seem to but I did like it A LOT! I gave This book 4.5 stars.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. This is another one of those super popular and hyped books. I mean there is even a movie adaptation of this one that’s hoe popular it is. I went into this with high expectations and although the whole mystery was not as shocking as I expected it to be, it was still an awesome book that is really well written. I gave this book 4.5 stars and I can’t wait to see the movie.

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. This book was Hilarious. I laughed so much while reading it and even just thinking back to some of the crazy things that happened in this book makes me crack up. On the surface, this book is about beauty queens that is stranded on a deserted island and has to survive, but really, it is mocking the ridiculous beauty standards in todays society. It was just amazing, unique and really funny. I gave it 5 stars.

Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn. This book was not for me. I really disliked all the protagonists and honestly did not care what happened to them at all. I gave this book 2 stars.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan. I finally did it, I continued on with the Percy Jackson series. This book was just as good as the first one and I really liked it. I gave it 4.5 stars and hopefully it won’t take me a year to get to book three.

Grimm Fairy Tales Vol 1 by Ralph Tedesco and joe Tyler. I’m not sure if this is a comic or a graphic novel but it was shelved the most times as a graphic novel so I’m going with that. This is the first graphic novel I have read in years and it reminded me how much I enjoy them. I really enjoyed the stories and the art was gorgeous. I gave it 4.5 stars.

Rat Queens Vol 1: Sass and sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch. I have been seeing this a lot on booktube lately and decided to try it. It was a fun read and I liked the illustrations a lot and will definitely be picking up vol 2 soon. I gave it 4 stars.

My unfinished series part 2

I recently did a post about my unfinished series. Since then I have remembered a lot more series I have not yet read. In my last post I only included completed series but in this one I have decided to include unfinished once that I’m not caught up on yet. I hope you enjoy seeing how awful I am at finishing series and that maybe it makes you feel better about your own huge TBR piles.

The Diviners series by Libba BrayThis series sounds interesting and somewhat scary, which is probably why I have yet to pick it up. I have a very low tolerance for ghosts; they scare the shit out of me. I do really want to read this series though because it takes place in the 20s in New York and has flappers and all that good stuff. This series is not completed yet and it looks like there will be two more books although there is no info about when these will arrive or what they will be called

The Remnant Chronicles Trilogy by Mary E. PearsonI read the first book in this series when it was released in 2014 and absolutely loved it. Then for some reason I never got around to picking up the second book and now it is almost time for the third book to be released. I have decided to wait until the third book is out and them marathon the entire trilogy because I don’t really remember much from the first book anymore. The third book comes out August the 2nd for those of you wondering.

The Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead I have read four books in this series and plan to read the last two soon. I have no idea why but Richelle Mead series take me ages to finish, not because I don’t like them but because I just can’t marathon them for some reason. I did really enjoy the first four books in this series though. 

The Graceling Realm series by Kristin CashoreI started reading Graceling about a year ago and then I got distracted by other books and completely forgot about it. I really did like what little I read and I hope to pick this series back up soon.

Snow like Ashes Trilogy by Sara RaaschThis is another series where I read the first book when it came out and never got around to reading book two. I have decided to just wait to read it until after September 20th when book three is published so I can just marathon book two and three.

The Malediction trilogy by Danielle L. JensenYet another series where I read the first book and then never got around to picking up the second. That really seems to happen a lot! I really liked the first book in this trilogy and I hope I can get around to finishing it soon. 

The 5th Wave Trilogy by Rick YanceyThe last book in this trilogy is being published this month and I have yet to start book one. This series has so much hype and the first book has even been made into a movie so yeah I need to get to it. I do plan to read the 5th wave this month and if I like it, I’ll probably read the infinite sea as well.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. MaasThis is probably the book I’m most excited about getting my hands on. I just want it now!

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan MatsonI love Morgan Matson and I am so excited that she has a new book! This one sounds like it will be just as great as her other books and the cover is so pretty.

Ruined by Amy TinteraThis will be a new author for me but the story sounds great so I have high hopes.

Queen of Hearts by Colleen OakesI really enjoy retellings and reading about how villains became the way they are, so this sounds perfect.

The May Queen Murders by Sarah JudeI don’t normally go for horror stories because I get scared easily but this one sounds too good to pass up.

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter HapgoodThis book sounds really intriguing and different and I can’t wait to read it.

The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. ArmentroutI love Jennifer L. Armentrout’s books and this one sounds amazing.

Girl Against the Universe by Paula StokesThis sounds like a fun, light contemporary and I tend to enjoy those.

1. It sounds like a great story.
2. It is a fantasy and I love fantasy.
3. It apparently has deception and I like reading about that.
